Ayurvedic Herbs for Healing Piles

Does the fear of rectal pain or bleeding grips you every morning? Are you challenged with piles? Piles, also known as “Hemorrhoids” in medical terms, are swollen, inflamed blood vessels in rectum (end part of large intestine) and the anus (the opening to pass stools). The bulging vessels and the supportive tissues around the anus form a mass or lump which may ooze blood or mucus, causing itch, pain and discomfort. Majority of people develop symptomatic piles at some point in life. Contributing factors like pregnancy, hereditary, aging, constipation or chronic diarrhea, and anal intercourse result in piles, but in most cases piles is a result of imbalanced lifestyle or diet.

Ayurveda describes piles as a digestive disorder caused by derangement of vata, pitta & kapha doshas. Aggravation or imbalance of these three doshas in the body directly affects the digestive power by resulting in toxin accumulation to cause flatulence, indigestion, constipation leading up to piles. Ayurvedic herbal therapies pacify the three doshas to restore the impaired digestion and help reduce the symptoms and discomfort caused in piles. Ayurvedic herbs and medicines exert laxative, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and hemostyptic (cessation of bleeding) properties to heal and relieve the pain and inflammation associated with piles.

Let us see some of the Ayurvedic herbs useful in healing piles.

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula): Terminalia chebula serves as an excellent rejuvenating and cleansing digestive aid. An important component of ayurvedic formulation Triphala, it effectively alleviates constipation and indigestion.

Khadir (Acacia catechu): Acacia catechu arrests bleeding, reduces swelling and tenderness, cures infection and exhibits ant-itching properties.

Kumari (Aloe barbadensis): Aloe barbadensis works as a soothing and cooling agent; it reduces itch, pain and discomfort associated with piles. It is known to accelerate and enhance the wound healing process.
