Are You Having Difficulty In Losing Weight? Blame Your PCOS..

Majority of the women diagnosed with PCOS are overweight. And do you ever wonder that why is it so difficult for some women to lose weight? You may indeed blame PCOS for this. One of the reasons why women with PCOS have difficulty with weight loss is because their insulin levels are generally higher as compared to other normal women.

Insulin plays two main roles:

  1. To get glucose into the cells
  2. To store glucose in the form of fat

If the insulin level is high, yet resistant to doing its work of getting glucose to the cells for immediate energy, then it has a lot of glucose to store as fat, resulting in obesity.

Women with PCOS have cravings regularly. These cravings being intense in nature, women often tend to overeat.

One study was done to compare the response to images of junk food after a sugar drink. Women who were not suffering from PCOS had no reaction to the images of food. Neither they were excited, nor did they have any cravings. This is because, their body was clear that they had consumed enough sugar and did not want anything more. Similarly, women who have PCOS were also given the sugar drink and then shown images of junk food, and it was found that sections of the brain were stimulated. All the more reason that women suffering from PCOS should avoid sugar, as sugar increases or aggravates the cravings.

One more reason why it is easy to gain weight for a woman with PCOS is that the metabolism is considerably slower!

The number of calories that your body needs to carry out basic functions for women without PCOS is about 1,800 calories. For women with PCOS, it is 1,450 calories

If a woman has insulin resistance along with PCOS—which is usually the case—then the calorie count required to carry different functions is even lower.  In women with PCOS, there is a tendency of fat storage in their tummy, which is the most common and risky area, especially as women age, because of the increased risk of heart disease related to this fat.

Irrespective of the cause, obesity is linked to several other disorders. Obese or overweight people are more prone to:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Infertility
  • High cholesterol

It is found that, women with PCOS are four to seven times more likely to have a heart attack than women of the same age without PCOS.

It is also believed that weight gain can trigger PCOS symptoms, such as abnormalities of menstrual cycle and acne.
